SEX - the other four letter word?

When is a story erotica or just romance? What do the readers prefer? A love story with hot sex, or hot sex with a love story? In my online blog stories I’ve walked a thin line on this issue. Crossing back and forth, justifying the flip-flopping as what my readers want, unsure if I’ve gone too far or not enough. Worried that my readers would see my indecision and read my uncertainty. Then finally giving up and just deciding to tell to the story.

A good story.

How can erotica, even at its best be a good story without something remotely identifiable inside? And if you think this way do you really want to read erotica? I have to admit that at first I didn’t, as a matter of fact - I never had until I started writing. And I foolish labeled myself an erotic writer just because I had a sex scene or two. For shame! How naive I was!

Sure there is a market for the soft porn low-key tales, but is that erotic? Not for me. Sorry, but the girl in me needs the world wind romance, which culminates with the mind blowing sex as an accessory. I’ve written many unpublished stories trying to find my inner voice, trying to decide if I’m a romance writer or an erotic storyteller. My readers tell me when they want the passion to intensify, but most want the surrender of the heart between the hero and heroine more. So too much sex can be a story killer, and too little. Well too little is definitely not hot enough.

Therefore I took it to the streets! Reading both romance novels and erotica. Trying to gleam the magic ingredient. Trying to discover if SEX truly is the four letter word?

During my happy travels online in the ebook community, I’ve stumbled across a storyteller who has an erotic story that blew my mind!! LOL! Nope it wasn’t the sex, though that was pretty hot - it was the story behind the sex that was hotter. If you don’t know her, you should definitely try her latest:

The Reinvention of Chasity. Her name is Eve Vaughn, and she appears to be a multifaceted writer specializing in erotic tales that range from contemporary romance to Fantasy and Sci-Fi. Her latest tale of a shy plain woman who carries a torch for her boss, is enthralling.

The story opens with a very relatable character by the name of Chasity, who has a unyielding crush on her Italian boss. Something he takes full advantage of for the perks of early morning coffee and everything he needs at his beck and command. However when Chasity hears the source of her adoration snickering about her looks and eagerness to please him her spirit is broken. She sets about a transformation to teach her boss a well deserved lesson, but along the way discovers more about herself and love than she bargained for.

Now readers be warned. It is off the chart with the steam and *ahem*, which made even this reader blush, but the story - the story is what I couldn’t pull away from. Eve Vaughn found the balance. Something romance writers struggle with when seeking their inner voice. I think those that aren’t afraid of the mix, would find something interesting in this tale.

And after all the reading and research I discovered that SEX can be the four letter word: LOVE! That is if told right! I’m not an erotic writer, but I sure as hell can appreciate an erotic scene! And there in lies my balance!
